Bike Diva Reviews LumeneX Bike Light

I spend most weekends at my friend's house out in Loxahatchee, Florida which is about 35 miles from my apartment in Boynton Beach. He lives right across the street from 60,000 acres of JW Corbett Wildlife Management Area.

I do a bit of trail running and mountain biking out in the Florida wilderness. We are going into the hot and humid summer of south Florida, so this time of year I try to get my workouts in either early morning or later in the evening.

I often start my workouts very early, before sunrise, or later in the day as the sun is starting to set. I have a road bike, mountain bike and cyclocross bike and don't have the $ to buy 3 different bike lights. I've been looking for a bike light that was rugged, yet easy enough to switch between bikes. 

Let Me See the Light

LumeneX was kind enough to send me one of their bike lights to test out and review for the Bike Diva blog. The light has 2 parts - a small flash light that gets attached to the front of your bike near the handle bars, and a small red tail light. Both lights use one of those flat watch/hearing aid type batteries.

The LumeneX bike light is exactly what I was looking for. It's light weight, battery operated, and easy to switch between bikes. The front light is adjustable from a wide beam of light to a fine pinpoint of light, depending on where you are using it. I use the wide beam setting when biking on roads and the pinpoint beam while riding on the trails.

I recently got to test out a microfiber towel from Shandali. I do a bit of running and cycling and always carry a small towel in my gym bag. I don't like beach towels, they take up a lot of room, and once you use them you're left with a stinky, wet mess. I use one of those chamois cloth towels on the rare occasions when I go to the gym or pool to go swimming. Chamois cloths have to be wet to work, so they are great to dry off after swimming but not so great if you're just trying to dry off after a hard workout in the woods. I probably should have gotten the medium size towel, which would have fit better on the driver's seat of my van so I could use it to sit on during the drive back home after running/biking.

The towel is very thin and folds up neatly to fit in the bottom of my sports bag without taking up a lot of room. The towel is made from super absorbent micro-fiber which doesn't get soaking wet after using it. I do most of my workouts outdoors, far away from a gym. I am a heavy sweater and need to have a towel to dry off after working out before getting back into my van.

I carry the towel with me at all times. It's a perfect way to dry off after a hot and steamy trail run or off-road mountain bike ride. Bike Diva Trains on CycleTEK Momentum

Do you live in a climate that's not conducive to year round training on your bike? Although I live in Florida, there are many days when I just can't get outside during daylight hours to train. Rainy days, short daylight hours during the winter, HOT days, hurricane watch - you get the idea.

I've wanted to get a bike trainer so I could enjoy indoor workouts anytime of day, night or during adverse weather conditions. CycleTEK was kind enough to send me one of their high-tech cycle trainers, the Momentum 1 Pro.

 

Quiet and Smooth Bike Trainer

The Cycletek Momentum uses a giant flywheel along with fluid resistance which makes it nice and quiet. I live in a Townhouse style apartment, so I've got neighbors on both sides of my unit. I usually watch a cycling DVD or my favorite movie to help relieve the boredom of indoor training. This unit isn't noisy so I don't have to turn the volume up to an unreasonable decibel level. That's a big win-win for both me and my fellow apartment dwellers.

Although the Cycletek has foldable legs, allowing it to be moved or put away in storage when not in use, it's pretty heavy so I have mine setup permanently in my living room. Right now I'm using the trainer with my Trek Madone 6.5 carbon frame road bike. This is the bike I race on so it makes sense to do most of my training on this bike. 

I find it can get a bit boring to train indoors so my apartment biking sessions are often under 1 hour in duration, although I have gone up to 80 minutes on the CycleTEK. To help make things more interesting I like to put in a great cycling movie, like Breaking Away, to help relieve boredom. I've also used some of the Epic Rides cycling videos to virtually ride great cycling routes across the United Sates while riding the CycleTEK.

Bike Diva Tries Dead Sea Mud Mask

I'm not usually a fan of product reviews written in exchange for free product. But when it's for a product I already use I am open to testing out other brands. I recently had a chance to try out a facial mask by Adovia. The problem I've had with other brands of mud masks is they have a tendency to dry out the skin around my eyes and cheeks. 

Adovia's mask contains ingredients including dead sea mud, aloe vera and vitamin C and is suitable for all skin types. I have combination skin - oily on my forehead and nose but a bit dry everywhere else. This mask contains beeswax, Jojoba oil, Evening primrose oil and olive oil, all of which made for a soothing yet cleansing mask.

I applied the product to my entire face, avoiding my eye area, and left on for 15 minutes. I rinsed the mask off with warm water and a clean, soft washcloth. After drying off my face I applied my favorite moisturizer around my eyes and neck. I liked that this mask didn't make my skin feel tight or dried out after I used it.

Boring Swim Training

I am trying to do a bit more swimming as my first 70.3 triathlon takes place on November 13 at Miami Man. The swim portion of that event is 1.2 miles, that's about 84 lengths, or 42 laps in a 25 yard pool. I just started swimming in January, so the swim is the weakest part of my triathlon. I can't say I really enjoy swimming, doing laps in the pool gets a bit boring, so I started thinking about listening to music while swimming as a way to prevent total boredom. I also wanted to start listening to music while doing my longer, solo runs and was pretty sure I would be getting an iPod Shuffle. After a quick trip to Walmart I came home with a lime green iPod Shuffle then had my 16 year old daughter teach me how to use the dang thing. Playlist, what the heck is a playlist!?!

While researching ways to listen to music under water, I came upon the H2O Audio website. H2O Audio makes a variety of waterproof headphones, cases and armbands for iPods, iPhones and MP3 players. Bike Diva's Verdict

Listening to music while doing swim workouts seems to make the workout go by a little bit quicker. The music also helped me to relax a bit which allowed me to concentrate on learning to breath on my right side. I always seem to breath on my left side but for longer events, and triathlons with an ocean swim with a lot of waves, I really need to be able to comfortably breath on both sides. I don't bilaterally breath, due to exercise induced asthma, and end up breathing every stroke during triathlons. I'm hoping I will eventually get better at swimming, have to be patient, only started swimming on January 3 so I see lots of room for improvement!

I will have to play around with the different size earplugs. They kept coming lose in the water, even having my swim cap covering my ears. Kind of the pain in the butt to have to keep adjusting the earphones after every few laps. Also, the volume is louder when your head is out of the water but gets a bit muffled when your head is in the water. So the music kept getting louder then softer the entire workout. Especially annoying when doing breast stroke but I even noticed the volume difference when breathing during free style swimming. I tried a couple sizes of the ear plugs but keep getting the same problem. Not getting a secure seal with the ear plugs and even turning volume way up getting really muffled sound quality while underwater.

Run With H2O Audio

H2O Audio also has a hat and visor which has been specifically designed to be used with either the 3G or 4G Interval. I purchased the hat, which is available in either white or black, so I could also use my H2O Audio while running. I am a heavy sweater and like having a totally waterproof option for using my iPod Shuffle while working out. Using the run hat with the Interval is also perfect if it starts to rain. Unlike cycling, I don't mind running in the rain, as long as there is no lightening involved.

I tried one of those waterproof armbands with the iPod Shuffle, but hated having it attached to my upper arm and always felt like the cord to the headphones got in the way of my arm swing. The entire setup is very lightweight and I barely noticed I was wearing it. The velcro straps on the hat keep the unit securely in place without any bouncing around.

The hat retails for $24.99, while the visor has a suggested retail price of $23.99. The hat includes a Halo headband attached to the inside, to help prevent sweat from dripping in your eyes. The hat would also be a perfect, waterproof solution for listening to music while kayaking or paddle boarding.

I will have to play around with the different size earplugs. I went for a short run around my neighborhood using the Interval attached to the running hat and the right earplug fell out of my ear a couple of times. I am using the size medium plugs, so not sure if I should go with the small, to fit tighter, or with the large to fill up my ear better. The manufacturers instructions say going with a larger size earplug while using the Interval in the pool may help to create a better seal. I switched to a larger size earplug for my second run with the Interval and had much better luck with the headphones staying in.

Compression Tights & Compression Triathlon Shorts

I recently had a chance to test out compression tights and triathlon shorts made by CW-X. I had been wanting to get a pair of compression tights to start using as a recovery tool after my long bike rides and runs. I figured the compression tights would also double as running tights in the winter and the tri shorts can be worn for regular biking and bike-to-run bricks. I probably would not wear them for any of my races, too many sponsorship obligations so I am usually racing in official team gear for Team Odwalla or one of my other sponsors.

CW-X has a size guide on their website. They say if your height and weight has you falling between sizes to choose the next size larger. I ordered the compression shorts and tights in women's size medium. In addition to the tights and shorts, CW-X makes a complete line of compression gear including:

Bike Diva's Verdict

Both the compression tight and compression shorts were a little bit tricky to get on. They kind of reminded me of putting panty hose on, work from the ankle up to the knee then finally pull them up to your waist. You work on getting on one leg at a time, and since they are so tight, it also kind of reminded me of putting on my wetsuit.

At first I thought I wasn't going to like the tri shorts, as they hit just above the knee. That is way longer than any of my other biking or running shorts. But once I started running, it was heaven! I normally have a lot of hip flexor pain, due to tight IT band, but the shorts felt like I was getting a message the entire time I was running. And they have a very light weight chamois pad to make the transition to biking comfortable.

Disney Marathon

Living in south Florida I will mainly use the compression tights as recovery gear to wear at home after my long run and bike workouts. But it does cool down for a day or two during the winter in Florida, so I might actually get a chance to wear them while running. I am doing the Goofy Race & 1/2 Half Challenge in Orlando in January, it can get a bit cool in Disney World that time of year, so I will pack my compression tights with me just in case. And I will definitely want to wear them after doing the 1/2 half marathon the day before doing the full.

Participating in both the Disney ½ marathon and Disney marathon is called the Goofy Race and ½ Challenge. I will be participating in this event with my local Team in Training chapter, while helping to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Disney will be my first running event with Team in Training. I have completed 5 century bike rides and 2 triathlons with TNT since 2006, while helping to raise over $30,000 for cancer research. Features Of The Skuut Metal Balance Bike

It is the joy of every parent to watch their child take their first steps in trying to learn how to ride a bike and although they like to see this, they cannot tell their child about the dangers which are involved in riding a bike, at a very young age. This is because owning a bike is one thing and riding it is a total different thing entirely and it is certainly not easy to tell a child that he/she can own a bike but he/she must wait to be a little older to ride it.

It is a common fact that learning to ride a bicycle might involve instances of hurt and bruises for a young child. Some parents are not prepared for this instance.
