I spend most weekends at my friend's house out in Loxahatchee, Florida which is about 35 miles from my apartment in Boynton Beach. He lives right across the street from 60,000 acres of JW Corbett Wildlife Management Area.

I do a bit of trail running and mountain biking out in the Florida wilderness. We are going into the hot and humid summer of south Florida, so this time of year I try to get my workouts in either early morning or later in the evening.

I often start my workouts very early, before sunrise, or later in the day as the sun is starting to set. I have a road bike, mountain bike and cyclocross bike and don't have the $ to buy 3 different bike lights. I've been looking for a bike light that was rugged, yet easy enough to switch between bikes. 

Let Me See the Light

LumeneX was kind enough to send me one of their bike lights to test out and review for the Bike Diva blog. The light has 2 parts - a small flash light that gets attached to the front of your bike near the handle bars, and a small red tail light. Both lights use one of those flat watch/hearing aid type batteries.

The LumeneX bike light is exactly what I was looking for. It's light weight, battery operated, and easy to switch between bikes. The front light is adjustable from a wide beam of light to a fine pinpoint of light, depending on where you are using it. I use the wide beam setting when biking on roads and the pinpoint beam while riding on the trails.

How Many Bikes Do You Own?

How long have you been a cyclist? I've been riding since around 2006. I started out as a mountain biker, but when hurricanes destroyed my favorite mtn bike trail, I purchased my first road bike. It was an aluminum frame by Cannondale. It was pretty slick compared to the mountain bike.

Since then I've owned a variety of bikes including a good old Hawaiian theme beach cruiser which I ended up giving to one of my neighbors. I think I had 3 or 4 bikes at the time, she was looking for a cheap/free bike to use around the neighborhood so she could keep up with her daughter as she bombed around the neighborhood on her in-line skates.

Time to Trade in the Bike

I eventually got rid of the mountain bike, my off-road skills kind of suck, and ended up trading in the aluminum frame for a full carbon roadie. Then I got into racing duathlons and triathlons and added a slick and fast Cervelo triathlon bike with aero bars to my cycling family.

But things have come full circle. I don't really race anymore so last year I traded in the tri bike for a couple of KHS mountain bikes. One for me and one for my bf so we could ride the unpaved trails around his house in Loxahatchee. He's right by the 60,000 acre JW Corbett Wildlife Preserve, so lots of unpaved trails to ride.

Bike Diva's Been Away

I think I forgot how to ride a bike I haven't been on one in so long. My only workouts for the past year have mostly been running.

I've undergone a lot of changes since December 29, 2011. I've gone through a divorce, moved out of my house, to a new town, got a new job, changed jobs, got laid off from that job and am now unemployed right before the holiday season.

Anyways, biking wasn't part of my life in 2012. I still own three bikes but am not sure how much use they will get. I brought my Felt Breed single speed cyclocross bike out to my boyfriends house. He lives in Loxahatchee, Florida on a dirt road, surrounded by more dirt roads so my road bike and triathlon bike are a bit of overkill out here.

He has a 900 pound mountain-ish type of bike and really isn't into biking. I am trying to either:

A. Coerce him into riding his bike.

B. Get him a better bike so he can keep up with me.

The last time I went out on my cyclocross bike I was chased by a large stray dog that smacked right into my bike. Luckily, I am an okay biker and managed to stay upright and not fall down in front of the minivan that was behind me. I also managed not to get mauled by the dog, but it kind of took the fun out of that workout.

Anyways, hopefully the new year will bring some new motivation to get back on my bike.

Bike Diva Likes Green Drinks

Last Monday I posted a review of The Healthy Green Drink Diet book to my Cuisine Diva blog: Healthy Green Drink Diet Book. I mentioned in the review that I would be trying to add at least one green drink to my diet, each day, for the first part of the week. I have been wanting to drop a few pounds, and starting my day off with a health infused green drink seemed the perfect way to jump start my weight loss plan.

I find that the key to loosing weight is to keep my metabolism fired up all day long. So instead of eating just a few, large meals each day, I eat many smaller meals throughout the day. I call this kind of eating grazing, because you are eating every couple of hours. This helps to maintain a normal blood sugar level too, as you shouldn't experience any highs or lows with your blood sugar level while eating small amounts of food throughout the day.

Here are my daily journal entries of my results from following the Healthy Green Drink Diet.

Monday, April 2nd; Weight - 148.5 Pounds

I started my day by making a Just Peachy smoothie, which is featured on page 67 of The Healthy Green Drink Diet book. I tried to follow the Paleo diet for most of the rest of the day while I was working out of my apartment. I knew I would probably eat regular food that night for dinner, as I was planning on going to my boyfriends house and he isn't currently following any specific eating plan.

• Pre Breakfast - Just Peachy smoothie
• Breakfast - 3 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon, mushrooms, thyme and garlic
• Cup of coffee after breakfast
• Snack - handful of dried fruit and nuts
• Lunch - green bean salad with red onion, black olives, cherry tomatoes, celery and tuna
• Snack - 2 slices smoked honey turkey breast with a handful of green grapes and sunflower seeds
• Cup of coffee after getting to my boyfriends house
• Snack - handful of dried fruit and nuts
• Dinner - whole wheat pasta, tomato sauce, ground turkey
• Snack - soy milk chocolate pudding

Summary - it was pretty easy to stick to the Paleo diet while at my apartment. I had a refrigerator and pantry full of healthy food choices. My boyfriend lives with his adult son, so the bachelor's rarely have any food in the house that isn't in a can or a box. I made the pasta, which we ate for dinner, on Sunday night. I would like to drink less coffee, as I put way too much creamer/sweetener in my coffee, which adds too many empty calories to my diet. But I suffer from migraine headaches on occasion and my favorite headache pill contains caffeine, so I'm afraid if I cut out the coffee completely I will have MASSIVE headaches.

Tuesday, April 3rd; Weight - 147.5 Pounds

The smoothie I choose for today was a modified version of the Tropical Sun smoothie which is featured on page 81 of The Healthy Green Drink Diet book. I blended together 1 cup coconut milk, 1 bunch flat leaved parsley, 1 handful spinach, 1 peeled orange, 1 peeled banana and 1 cup of pineapple chunks. This recipe made 2 cups of a pretty sweet tasting green drink. I drank 1 cup before breakfast, and was going to drink the 2nd cup before lunch, but it tasted kind of funky to me when I tried the 2nd cup, so I ended up putting it down the garbage disposal.

• Pre Breakfast - Tropical Sun smoothie
• Breakfast - 2 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon, mushrooms, thyme and garlic
• Cup of coffee after breakfast
• Snack - sliced carrots, green grapes, 2 slices smoked honey turkey breast
• Lunch - green bean salad with red onion, black olives, cherry tomatoes, celery and tuna
• Snack - 2 chocolate peanut butter candies, 4 chocolate mint cookies
• Dinner - fish sandwich, french fries, iced tea

Wednesday, April 4th; Weight - 147 Pounds

After eating junk yesterday afternoon and evening, I thought for sure my weight would be right back where I started. But I still managed to lose another half a pound. Going to try REALLY hard today to stick to eating healthy. Late afternoon I made Swedish meatballs and noodles at my apartment. I'll be taking that over to my boyfriends house for dinner tonight.

• Pre Breakfast - grape pear smoothie
• Breakfast - 2 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon and thyme, leftover scalloped potatoes
• Cup of coffee after breakfast
• Snack - apple cinnamon fruit & grain bar
• Pre Lunch - grape pear smoothie
• Lunch - Swedish meatballs, egg noodles, oven roasted asparagus
• Snack - handful of dried fruit and nuts
• Dinner - Swedish meatballs, egg noodles, oven roasted asparagus
• Snack - peanut butter and jelly sandwich

Thursday, April 5th; Weight - 146.5 Pounds

Last night I felt really bloated and gassy. I think having two smoothies, instead of the usual two, was more than my stomach could handle. So today, I chose to skip the pre-breakfast smoothie, and have a slightly larger breakfast than normal.

I made a smoothie at around 10 AM, to have as a pre-lunch healthy green drink. I made up my own recipe to make a peach yogurt smoothie. I posted the recipe up to my Cuisine Diva blog.

• Breakfast - 2 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon and sauteed mushrooms, English muffin
• Cup of coffee after breakfast
• Pre Lunch - peach yogurt smoothie
• Snack - apple cinnamon fruit & grain bar
• Lunch - peach yogurt smoothie
• Snack - handfull of dried fruit and nuts
• Dinner - Swedish meatballs, egg noodles, oven roasted asparagus

Bike Diva's Opinion

I weighed myself first thing Friday morning, the scale said I was down to 146 poudns, so I managed to lose 2.5 pounds over 4 days, while consuming a heatlhy green drink first thing in the morning. I spent the 3 day Easter weekend at my boyfriends house and decided not to continue with the daily Green Diet Drink over the weekend. It's kind of hard cooking/making food at the bachelor pad, and we had a few social events planned over the weekend and didn't want to be bothered with trying to fit the green drink diet into our plans.

The added benefit of incorporating smoothies and/or homemade juices into your diet is that they are made from raw, unprocessed, uncooked food. You should also try and purchase organic ingredients for your green drinks, as many fruits and vegetables have high levels of pesticides and other chemicals.

Consuming a green drink, into your daily nutrition plan, is a great way to add healthy fruits and vegetables to your diet. It also makes a great start to a stricter diet plan for anyone looking to drop a few pounds of unwatned weight.

2012 West Palm Beach Race Series

I've been waiting for the official schedule to come out for the West Palm Beach Race Series. WPBRS is a series of 15k time trial bike races which take place near 20 Mile Bend in West Palm Beach. I have been doing a few of the races every year since 2008.

There is a lot going on in my personal life right now, so I am looking for some local, inexpensive races to participate in for 2012. Each race costs $15, which is pretty cheap as far as races are concerned. Awards are given out 5 deep in 10 year age groups, along with awards for the days fastest male and female cyclist.

Triathlete Back to Duathlete

After much soul searching and deliberation, I have decided I really don't like swimming. So although I made 2011 the year of the triathlon, I have decided to switch back to racing duathlons and participating in some cycling only events. I wouldn't call the great triathlon experiment a failure, I did manage to complete 9 sprint triathlons and 1 Olympic distance triathlon in 2011. Not too bad for someone that didn't start swim training until January 3, 2011.

No Stress Racing

I still have way too much anxiety during the swim leg of triathlons which is taking all the joy out of racing. When I made the decision to stop training for triathlons, about a week ago, it was like a HUGE weight was suddenly lifted off my shoulders. I didn't realize I also really hate swim training, as trying to fit in 3 types of workouts every week was just stressing me out. I still plan on using my triathlon bike for all the duathlons I will be racing, so I need to do at least 2 tri bike or tri-bike-to-run brick workouts per week, in addition to group rides on the road bike.

Trying to fit in all my swim workouts during 2011 had me scaling way back on my bike mileage. I hardly rode my road bike at all this year and didn't do ANY cycling only events in 2011. So my bike endurance and confidence has plummeted due to lack of time on the bike. But now I will be getting back to some group rides on my road bike while training for my cycling events.

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride

If you look at my schedule for 2012, you will see I have a few run only events planned, lots of duathlons and will now add a few cycling events back to the mix. I'll be doing America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride (AMBBR) on June 3rd with the Palm Beach Florida chapter of Team in Training. AMBBR is a 100 mile century bike ride which circumnavigates Lake Tahoe while cycling through the mountains in Nevada and California.

My husband and I did AMBBR back in 2009 with Team in Training to help raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Here are links to two race reports I wrote for the 2009 AMBBR.

Bike Diva's 2011 Race Summary

2011 was an epic year for me. Despite an extreme water phobia, I started swimming in January so I could begin competing in triathlons. I did my first swim at our local YMCA on January 3, then raced my very first triathlon on February 6. I participated in a total of 19 races in 2011, including 9 sprint and one Olympic distance triathlon.

At the end of every year I send out a sponsored athlete race recap, to let each sponsor know the details of all the races I competed in, my race results and tentative race schedule for the upcoming year.
